The mason rustcell split from it's ancestor on Mason. They evolved from the rusty symbiocells that were brought over when seeds from the orbit voltflora landed there. Without the orbit voltflora they could not survive well and they slipped into hibernation. Occasionally, a cell would reanimate, if only just long enough to reproduce. Eventually, these events became more and more frequent as they adapted, leading to a new species. They are functionally the same as their distant ancestor, the simple majurum.
