The pedemuk feeds on tiny flora it scrapes off the soil with its hoe-like protrusion. Once it forms a small pile, the pedemuk everts its pharynx from the mouth on its underside and swallows the pile. The flora either grows atop the highly fertile soil or washes up on the banks of the river. Due to a lack of predators, the pedemuk's shell is even lighter, to the point it's nearly as soft as a caterpillar's skin.
Pedemuks are simple-minded creatures that navigate mostly by smell, which they detect with the sensitive tentacle-lips near their mouths.
Due to its fast breeding and lack of predators, they are very common in their habitats. In certain areas they reach nearly ant-like abundance, to the point one can easily step on a few by accident. Tipsnappers are often the cause of ant-like densities, for their waste makes the soil even more fertile. The sheer density of pedemuks around tipsnapper nesting areas means the nesting areas are often festooned with orange shell-skin, for the tipsnappers accidentally step on pedemuks and the orange shell-skin is more resistant to rotting than the rest of the body.
