The quilled slingberry split from its ancestor, it is shorter and produces fewer seeds. Its leaves are now thin long needles so that cold doesn't damage them as much. The stalk is thick to protect the inner tissue from frostbite. It lives in clusters due to the seeds often not breaking away from each other, these clusters are fairly common.
