The seagem split from it's ancestor, the seacrystal. It's colors, when reflected by the sunlight create a rainbow effect on the waters surface. Each gem is made of hard photosynthetic chitin which has tiny holes in them. As it is higher up it has a better chance of getting sunlight. The more colors there are on the gems the the more sunlight it has absorbed.
