The twinkiiro gilltail split from its ancestor the marine gilltail. It has changed niches from eating only crystal flora to eating only twinkiiros and twinkorals, which are much easier to digest. Since twinkiiros and twinkorals are abundant everywhere they have spread to most of of the warmer coasts, rivers and wetlands of Darwin. Its coloration is now yellow with spots to blend in with the twinkiiros it eats. Like their ancestor they lay their eggs in the sand or mud.
