Ancestor:Descendants:

The briarback replaced its ancestor the whiskerslurp. Due to the heavy predation from ukjaws and other carnivores it needed to quickly adapt. It evolved many wooden quills all over its back to protect it. They were much too slow to run from the speedy predators, but now they don't have to. While still nocturnal, they have regained some primitive eyes; this helps them see shapes in the moonlight.

Unlike their ancestors, they no longer live in Ferret Limestone Caves. However they still use echolocation and touch to navigate in at night. Two of their prehensile whiskers have become like pseudo-arms that can grasp food such as berries. The other pairs of whiskers have become vestigial and are not used very much anymore. They use their real forelimbs to dig burrows. They sleep in the burrows during the day to keep cool. They have 1 to 2 offspring that the female raises for 10 months. They live for around 15 years.
