The coastpuff split from it's ancestor when a mutation caused the spores to become lighter then usual and become airborne when moderate wind blew. At first this did not have a effect on the umbrellapuff's ability to reproduce, so a sizeable population grew within the species. Every so often strong storms arise and blow huge clouds of spores out towards the coast. Most of these settle into the coast but die. However a few survives and adapt to the beach. They are functionally the same as their ancestor, but now have thicker skin on their spores to help them stay hydrated because they are spread in the surf.
