Ancestor:Descendants:

The crimson leviathan is the result of abyssal gigantism. Descended from speckled snarks that began to filter-feed on small macroscopic organisms and followed such organisms as the pollinating darkswarmer into the depths. Now one of the largest living organisms of Sagan 4, it feeds on some of the tiniest of macroscopic life consisting of everything 10 cm long and smaller. They are a slow growing species that tend to live alone in the darkness of the abyss. They are lethargic animals that require less food compared to surface dwelling creatures that reach similar sizes.

While still possessing teeth, they have become more needle-like, making them more effective at snagging small prey, though they are not truly necessary in adult crimson leviathans who merely swallow their prey whole with large gulping actions, taking in large amounts of water as well. Their rear fins have atrophied, and have been counter-measured by larger, more powerful front fins and tail.
