The probing gilltail split from its ancestor, the foi-eating gilltail. It moved to the eastern coasts of Drake and Darwin. It still specializes in eating foi. It has evolved a longer beak in order to probe the sand for hidden foi. Its rounder find also allow for better maneuverability when turning in place. Like its ancestor its uses its "taste" sensors in its beaked to detect the scent of the digestive juices of a foi's external digestive system. They will travel in small school to protect themselves from larger predators. The are purple in color to blend in with the marine bubbleweed. They will lay their eggs on marine bubbleweed leaves. They will mate every spring.
