The gillossus split from its ancestor and has grown to tremendous size. It has adapted to filter-feed on small organisms. It filters by opening its mouth, closing it and then pressing the water out through rake-like jaw modifications. It sometimes filters the sand. If it gulps an organism that is too big, it opens its mouth to release it; with this method it avoids injuries in its body. It uses its bioluminescent patterns to communicate.
